RMA Insurance

On behalf of its members, the Alberta Federation of Rural Water Co-operatives participates in an insurance program sponsored by the Rural Municipalities of Alberta. It can be difficult to buy insurance for a small water utility at a reasonable rate. By combining the assets and risk profile of the Water Federation membership, we are able to reliably offer appropriate insurance at a reasonable cost to our members.

Because of the nature of the policy, RMA insurance coverage for liability, theft, fraud and other similar risks is standardized for all members. Coverage for loss of member assets and vehicles can be tailored by each member to suit their operations.

Below are forms that are applicable to the insurance program and may be needed from time to time by members.

Handling Insurance Claims

When something goes wrong, what you do in the first few hours and days can make a real difference to how smoothly your claim is resolved. The steps below apply to members insured through the Federation's group insurance program.

First steps for any claim

No matter what type of loss your co-op has experienced, start here:

  1. Record the details. As soon as the loss is discovered, write down what happened, when and where it happened, who was involved, and any witnesses. Take photos wherever possible.
  2. Report crimes to the police. All accidents, thefts, and vandalism must be reported to the police. Keep the file number for your records.
  3. Notify the Federation right away. Contact the Federation office as soon as possible. The Federation will report the claim to RMA's claims team for you.
  4. Wait for your adjuster, then follow their direction. Once the Federation has reported your claim, an adjuster will be assigned and will contact you. Wait for their guidance before taking further action.
  5. Do not admit fault or liability. Don't tell anyone that your insurance will cover their damages. Determining liability is the adjuster's job.
  6. Leave estimates to the adjuster. Don't ask third parties to get damage estimates. In most cases, the adjuster will refer them to a qualified appraiser.

Liability, property, and crime claims

These claims are generally straightforward. Document everything as soon as the loss is discovered, report it to the police if a crime is involved, notify your adjuster promptly, follow their direction, and don't admit fault.

Auto claims

Auto claims usually involve more moving parts: other drivers, other insurers, repairs, and rental vehicles. Because of this, our insurer has provided more detailed instructions, including how to handle repairs, deductibles, and GST reimbursement. Please review the document below if your co-op is involved in a vehicle accident or loss.
