Communities in Action: Celebrating Co-operative Excellence
The Water Federation’s recognition program is not only about individuals. It also celebrates communities that work together with integrity, innovation and shared purpose. This year, two water co-ops were recognised at the AGM for showing what strong water stewardship looks like when a community makes it a priority.
"These co-operatives remind us that great water systems are not built by infrastructure alone. They are built by people who care about their neighbours and take that responsibility seriously,” said Chris Hancock, Water Federation Executive Director.
Impactful Co-op:
Sylvan Westside Country Water Co-op
With 12 connections, Sylvan Westside is a model of shared responsibility. Members contribute based on their skills and expertise, maintaining reliable infrastructure, consistent monitoring and thoughtful operational practices, including adapting testing methods to address naturally high pH levels in their water supply.
The co-op is also looking ahead, with planned pump house upgrades and exploration of remote monitoring. Their active participation in Federation initiatives, including the GIS project and the 2024 Rural Water Study, shows a commitment not only to their own system but to the broader co-op network. Small in size, significant in impact.
Co-op of the Year:
Josephburg Water Co-op
Josephburg Water Co-op is a highly professional and well-managed system, serving more than 200 connections across over 225 kilometres of fully mapped pipeline. Supported by experienced staff and operators, they maintain high standards while planning ahead, including exploring solutions to optimise chlorine residuals across their system.
A key partner to the Water Federation, Josephburg contributes time, expertise and leadership to initiatives like the GIS mapping project, setting a gold standard for co-ops across Alberta. It is fitting that the co-op where founding director Keith Johnston served continues to honour that legacy through excellence.
The Water Federation thanks both co-operatives for their dedication. To honour their contributions, each co-op was presented with a piece from Albertan artists Justina Smith and Glen Sergy.
